Worshippers think that if you pray heartily, your wishes will come true. Goddess Bhagawati is assumed to fulfill the desires of all those who make the pilgrimage to her shrine to worship her. The temple is situated 1302 feet above sea level on a ridge, and from the top, you can see the river valley of Trishuli in the south and Marshyangdi flowing in the west.

History

The history of the Goddess Manakamana goes all the way back to the reign of King Ram Shah of Gorkha during the 17th century. His queen is said to have had supernatural powers, which only her devotee, Lakhan Thapa, understood. One day, in the embodiment of the Goddess, the King witnessed his Queen and Lakhan Thapa in the shape of a lion. After revealing the discovery to his queen, the king suffered a sudden death.

The queen performed sati (ritual immolation) on her husbands’ funeral pyre, as per the custom of that time. The Queen had assured Lakhan Thapa before her Sati and said she would reemerge in the near future. 6 weeks later, a farmer broke a stone while plowing his fields. He saw a flow of blood and milk flowing from the pillar. When Lakhan learned an account of this occurrence, at the site where the stone had been found, he immediately began performing Hindu tantric rituals, thus ceasing the flow of blood and milk. The site became the base of the new sanctuary. The priest at the temple must be a descendant of Lakhan Thapa, according to practice.
